José Cendón, (32), Spain, studied successively economic science, journalism, and cinema before turning to a profession in journalism. From 2002 to 2004 he worked as a freelance writer and intermittently as a photographer in Colombia, Venezuela, Israel, and the Palestinian Territories, collaborating with Cover photo agency (Spain) and other Spanish media. In 2004 he focused solely on photography, working as stringer for AP for several months in Darfur.

Since 2004 he has been a stringer for Agence France-Presse first in Darfur and from 2005 covering the African Great Lakes Region (Rwanda, DRC, Burundi and Uganda). In 2007 he received an honorable mention in the Leica Oskar Barnack prize, and is now moving to Ethiopia to cover the conflict with Somalia for AFP.
